Welcome to my blog page! I am a former educator with a master’s degree in psychology and a recent certification in wellness coaching. I left education due to a potentially severe medical condition and chose to do what I love, which is partner with people who want to attain or improve their health and fitness.
I became interested in the effects of food and nutrition on health and well-being in the early 1970s, long before it was fashionable. I studied and read extensively, and it was then that I decided to quit eating proteins other than fish and chicken because of the detrimental effects of red meat on one’s health. I have kept to that way of eating ever since.
I have been an athlete for most of my life. I was a competitive swimmer between the ages of 10 and about 13 and even swam in the Junior Olympics. I rode horses (my own), played on high school volley ball teams, and I have maintained a fitness regimen for more years than I can count. I am currently a competitive tennis player.
I have firsthand knowledge of the struggles women face with body image, diet, and weight. I was overweight as a child, then lost the weight when I went on to college. In my twenties, wanting to be what was perceived as thin and beautiful, I developed anorexia and bulimia. Fortunately, I was able to overcome these diseases and regain a normal weight. Now that I am over fifty, I am experiencing the slower metabolism and automatic weight gain that accompanies midlife for many, and I recognize that in order to maintain healthy weight, my lifestyle must include daily exercise and proper diet. How I do this is a whole other story, but I will say that I have a coach who encourages and supports me very effectively!
I am a breast cancer survivor, and I also work with women diagnosed with this disease as well as the survivors like myself who must be vigilant about their health. Studies have shown that diet and exercise play a pivotal role in maintaining a cancer-free life; diet and exercise thus becomes acutely important for cancer survivors.
My current fitness regimen consists of eating mindfully, playing tennis practically every day, weight training once or twice a week, yoga once a week, and vigorous step aerobic classes, which I love, three times a week. I live close to an urban lake in Oakland, CA, and I walk around its 3 1/2 mile perimeter frequently. And finally, I am a certified group fitness instructor and I have taught step, sculpting, and hi/lo impact aerobics.
I believe in balance and being present, living loud and sweating every day. I believe in strong, active, vibrant women who speak their minds and love their lives. Thank you for visiting my blog and I look forward to working with you!
